The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has made a significant announcement regarding the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), signaling a commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities. According to Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, the forthcoming UTME will waive registration fees for individuals with disabilities, aligning with efforts to create a level playing field for all candidates.
In a media interactive session kicking off the registration process, Prof Oloyede disclosed that JAMB would provide free application documents to all categories of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD). This move is seen as a proactive measure to offer support and ensure accessibility to education for everyone.
Moreover, in a bid to cater specifically to blind candidates, JAMB will introduce audio books in popular formats like MP3, WMV, and WMA. This initiative stems from the recommendations made during the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria. These audio books aim to enhance comprehension and understanding of exam subjects or texts for visually impaired candidates.
To further accommodate blind candidates, diagrams will be excluded from their examination questions, ensuring that the evaluation process is equitable for all participants. Additionally, all candidates, irrespective of their abilities, will receive an electronic copy of the reading text for the 2024 UTME.
The digital adaptation of the reading material is a step towards modernizing the examination process and making it accessible to candidates using various devices that can stream audio records. Prof Oloyede emphasized the importance of this approach in aiding blind candidates to easily comprehend the subject matter.
Registration for the 2024 UTME commenced on January 15, with a registration fee of N6,200 for candidates not taking the mock examination and N7,700 for those participating in the mock. This fee structure aims to accommodate different preferences while maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
In essence, JAMB's announcement reflects a commendable effort to ensure that education is inclusive and accessible to all, reinforcing the importance of equal opportunities in the pursuit of higher education in Nigeria.
